As an integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor I offer a patient and open approach to counselling. For problems such as depression and anxiety, or problems with relationships, Integrative Counselling provides an holistic approach to counselling that embraces humanistic, psychoanalytical, and cognitive models of counselling to offer a talking therapy that respects the individuality of the client.

I also offer the option of Mindful CBT which is a way of working with some issues and suits individuals who wish to follow a more structured approach to therapy. The mindful approach to CBT emphasises the concept of the "compassionate mind" that the model seeks to develop in the client when exploring the issues that give rise to distress.

Although my counselling is based on a sound understanding of theory, my phenomenological approach to practise means that I do not attempt to diagnose but work with you to describe your emotional experience with increasing precision, allowing you to reach a greater existential understanding of yourself and your relationships. With this deepening understanding it is then possible to experiment with ways of being or behaving to develop a more compassionate self and have a positive impact on your day-to-day living.

My Relationship wth Mindfulness

My relationship with mindfulness began many years ago when I spent lunchtimes by a lake on the Cambridge Science Park watching dragonflies. What I began to notice is how by watching them with complete attention, any stress I had been feeling would dissipate and I would return to work feeling much calmer and with far more focus.

This led me to explore mindfulness, meditation and spiriuality by reading works by writers such as Jon Kabat-Zinn, William Bloom and Irvine Yalom. I discovered that regularly bringing focus onto my breathing allowed me to manage the stress of working life a little more effectively. With practice it has become possible to use simple focus on breathing to restore calm even in busy surroundings.

Visualisation offers a powerful way to meditate and I particularly enjoy using the image of a sunrise over a familiar beach from my childhood or over Lake Garda. I am sure we can all recall beautiful scenes from our own lives and learn to use them to develop our own mindfulness practice.

The dragonfly has become a symbol for me of the essence of how mindfulness can impact how we relate to our world.
